Individual And Group Health Insurance

Nowadays, there are lots of options to get a Health Insurance policy. You can get an individual health insurance as well you can join a group of insured people, which can help to reduce your premiums, i.e. Group Health insurance.

Individual Health Insurance

A person holding an individual health insurance policy can customize it according to his own requirements and needs. These facilities and flexibility is not available with group health plans and you are not able to tailor the policy having a group insurance policy, that’s why you could say it’s more beneficial.

However, individual health insurance policies do have their dark aspects. First of all they are usually more expensive than a group health insurance. Claims must be filed which is not the case with all group policies. A higher part of the individual health policy may be deductible and there could be lower limits for major medical, mental health and medications in individual health insurance.

Group Health Insurance

Group health policies have a few bifacial advantages. Like group policies are a lot cheaper in comparison to Individual health policies. Regarding health everyone is eligible to get the coverage. Group health insurance coverage is typically comprehensive, and premiums can be deducted from paychecks if the policyholder is the employer. Generally the converge can’t be raised off cause on number of claims someone has. You can select your own health provider with most of the group health policies.

As far as the disadvantages are concerned, you lose all your coverage when you are not belonging any more to the group. However, the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) of 1985 requires a continuation privilege meaning that you can keep group insurance coverage by paying the premium yourself if you leave the group for a specified time period. Those people who have dependent children such as widows, divorcees or separated spouses with dependent children can do it for about three years. However, retired people and their dependent children or spouse may use it for 18 months.

You cannot tailor your policy for your general needs; that’s a big disadvantage of group policy. Usually, group policies need claims, which has high deductibles. Generally these policies do not cover preventive care. There are low limits for major medical, mental health and medications
