So claim only when it is absolutely necessary. If you feel your insurer isn't fast enough in acting on your claim, call your state's insurance department.

Apart from the above mention points, following are the points, which can tell you how to file an insurance claim effectively:

Understand the Policy

The policyholder must know properly, make sure what is covered and what is not. It is more like a contract between you and the insurance company. Enquire any doubt immediately before you need the claim.

Be Fast In Claiming

Don’t waste time. As some policies require notification within a limited time frame, make call immediately as soon as you need it.

Stay away from ‘lawyer’if possible:

The company may feel risky in case lawyers or other legal proceedings are involved. Also, if you hire an attorney, most of the communications would be between he and the company with lesser involvement of you. So, call your state insurance department first if you really need help settling your claim.

Have a copy of the police report:

In case of accident or collision, keep a copy of the police report with you. Take down name, address, phone number and name of the other party's insurance company. Try to avoid of offering to pay for damages and don’t accept the fault. It can hamper in your policy coverage.

Get multiple estimates:

Try to take estimates from at least two repairers for your vehicles or home. It will help you in giving more accurate costs.

Make temporary repairs:

Don’t scare to making temporary repairs for your home. And maintain copies of bills for it. It can protect you from further damage, and it can be covered by your policy as well. However, don’t start any permanent repairs until you hear from an adjuster.

Save every Document:

Maintain each and every evidences and documents to show to the company. It might be papers, videotapes, photographs or whatever it is. Just support your claim with best evidences.

There are a few questions you must ask yourself before filing an insurance claim. How much liability insurance do you have? This coverage pays for damage you cause to another vehicle or injuries to other people. Does your state have no-fault insurance? What coverage does it provide? What is the deductible for your collision and/or comprehensive coverage?
