Update
Your Home Insurance
Homeowners need to realize
that keeping their insurance policy up to date is their responsibility.
Any item bought or given as a gift is now inside the home,
it could be an expensive painting or a crystal vase can be
added to the contents insurance policy. Usually your premium
will increase a little but for the price it is worth it. If
any of these items are damaged or stolen, now when a claim
is made, the insurance company can reimburse for the items.
Many homeowners add more than £10,000 in possessions
a year and do not add this to their contents policy. This
would be the reason for many insurance claims being turned
down. If the insurance company does not know about the item
to begin with, how can they reimburse for it.
If insurance companies increase their sum to unlimited, it
would help prevent homeowners from not being fully covered.
Underinsuring homes causes aggravation to the homeowner by
raising expectations to be reimbursed in full, and the reality
happens that many claims are refused. This occurs due to not
reading the fine print and insurance companies not providing
this information voluntarily. Many policy’s have an
average clause which states if the home is insured for only
2/3rds its value, then 2/3rds is the amount for the claim
or less.
Insurance company standard insurance policies limit one single
item can be £1,000 at the maximum. This price doesn’t
cover most electronics in a home in today’s market;
this would be a sufficient reason to keep your home insurance
policy updated.
Some suggestions to help add your new possessions to your
current insurance policy can be make a list when a new item
is brought into the home. For example, you receive an anniversary
present from your partner priced at $10,000 (diamond ring),
write it on the list. Call your insurance company every few
months to check on your coverage and what is being covered
under your policy. The reverse can happen also where an item
was sold or given to a charity and it has been on your insurance
policy.
Taking responsibility for your home, its contents, and your
possessions can be easier with some organizing. This process
may not happen in a weekend, but once you update your
home insurance policy, if something is damaged or
stolen, at least now you are covered.
