Airways
Thai Airways operates domestic,
regional and intercontinental travel flights from its home
base in Bangkok. The company has been profitable for the past
forty years. In 1960, Thai Airways International was established.
It was a joint venture between Thailand's domestic travel
carrier, Thai Airways Company (TAC) and Scandinavian Airlines
System (SAS). At first, the Scandinavian carrier initially
provided a 30% share capital of two million Baht. They also
provided operations, managerial and marketing expertise. Training
was aimed at establishing an independent airline in a short
amount of time. Over time, Thai nationals began assuming full
managerial responsibilities. In 1977, the Thai Government
bought out SAS remaining 15 % holding.
Initially, Thai airways flew
travel flights from Bangkok to 9 overseas locations. All designations
were within the Asian Region. They initiated Intercontinental
services 1971. Thai started flying to Australia and later
Europe and North American. In 1988, Thai Airways International
merged with Thai Airways Company. This greatly accelerated
the growth of Thai Airways. Now Thai Airways was responsible
for both international and domestic commercial aviation.
In 1991, THAI was able to
list their shares on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. This
was approved by the Thailand Cabinet and Thai was able to
convert Baht 10.77 billion of retained earnings into capital,
and increase its capital by an additional Baht 3 billion.
One hundred million shares were allowed for first issue. Five
million were reserved for THAI employees.
