Scandinavian
Airlines
In 1918 the Danish parent
company (DDL) was founded. Then in 1924 the Swedish parent
company ABA was founded and Norwegian parent company followed
in 1927.
The Swedish Intercontinental
Air Lines (SILA) was founded in 1943. This company made their
first post-war commercial flights in 1945. On the first of
August in 1946, DDL, DNL and SILA formed SAS. This was for
intercontinental operations. Then DDL, DNL and ABA formed
European SAS in 1948.
In 1954, DDL, DNL and ABA
formed the current SAS Consortium. The agreement was for 25
years and has since been extended through 2020. In 1954, SAS
opened the first Polar shortcut in the world. The airline
received their first DC-7C piston-engined, long range airliners.
The same year they opened routes to Moscow and Riga. The airline
inaugurated the North Pole shortcut in 1957. The shortcut
was Copnehagen-Anchorage-Tokyo and established a round-the-world
network.
SAS becomes the first travel
airline to use Caravelle jets for scheduled service. The,
“top-of-the-world” land-based domestic network
was opened in North Norway, Tromsø-Alta-Lakselv- Kirkenes
and later a route to Montreal. These new routes were opened
in 1963. SAS became the pioneer of a new shortcut in 1967.
This shortcut was the Trans-Asian Express between Copenhagen
and Southeast. Throughout the 70’s and 80’s many
new routes were introduced. In 1992, SAS route Copenhagen-Vilnius
opened. This completed SAS service to all three of the Baltic
capitals. In 2001, the airlines opened a new service between
Copenhagen and Washington D.C. This was the first time since
1966, they opened a new US travel destination.
Scandinavian Airlines
strives to offer low fare. They are continuously adding to
and updating their travel fleets. Over the years they have
constantly entered code share and other agreements with other
air carriers so they could offer a larger network and more
travel destinations to their customers.
If you are planning to make
many tripe abroad in the coming year you should have a travel
insurance policy in place, this may be better if
you chose to buy a multi trip travel insurance policy,
which may offer a discount from the single trip travel
insurance.
