Iberia
On June 28, 1927, Iberia,
Compañía Aérea de Transporte, was established.
The airline started out with three Rohrbach Roland aircraft.
The aircraft included room for a crew of two, ten passengers
on wicker seats.
During their first decade
in operation, the company linked major cities on the Spanish
mainland, the Canary Islands, and North Africa. Iberia began
offering trvel flights to Lisbon and Portugal 12 years after
they started operations, making them an international travel
airline. They began regular travel flights to London, Lisbon,
Paris and Rome as well as Buenos Aires and Montevideo in the
early 1940’s. They were the first airline to provide
regular service between Europe and South America after the
war.
Iberia surpassed the half-million
passenger mark in the 1950’s. They introduced flights
between Spain and New York. They began replacing propeller-driven
planes with new jet aircraft in the 1960’s. They took
delivery of their first three jet airlines in 1964. These
jets were intended for travel flights from Pain to New York,
Caracas, San Juan, Mexico City, Havana and Beunos Aires. Between
1970 and 1980 they began stressing more importance on customer
service. They did so by offering new destinations including:
as Istanbul, Athens, Warsaw, Budapest, and Kuwait. They also
introduced pioneer services including the Madrid-Barcelona
air shuttle and the Serviberia telephone service line. They
started the Red Jacket service for passengers with special
needs.
In 1999. Iberia joined
the oneworld airline alliance. Iberia is a profitable company.
Today as always, they continue to take their social and environmental
responsibilities seriously. Iberia has always done their part
to help others. An example is the "Mano a Mano"
NGO. This was started by employees to collect and give out
aid to those in need. Over a ten year period Iberia transported
1.000 tonnes of humanitarian aid to people in many places
including: Peru, Sudan, Nicaragua, Honduras, Mauritania and
El Salvador.
