British Airways
The history of British Airways
can be traced back to the start of civil aviation. One of
the company’s predecessors started the world’s
first daily international travel schedule air services in
1919. Four of Britain’s main airlines merged in 1924
to form Imperial Airways Limited. The airway was providing
services to Paris, Brussels, Basle, Cologne and Zurich by
1925. In the 20’s and 30’s
even more services were launched. Travel destinations included
Egypt, the Arabian Gulf, India, South Africa, Singapore and
West Africa. Several small UK air transport companies merged
to form British Airways Limited in 1935. In 1939 British Airways
and Imperial Airways were nationalized. They then formed British
Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC).
After the war, BOAC continued
long haul services, which were fun by British South American
Airways. A new airline named British European Airways ran
Continental European and domestic travel flights. The BOAC
continued to launch new services over the next several years
to places including: New York, Japan, Chicago and the west
coast of the US. The principal British air carriers providing
international travel services between 1946 and 1960 were BOAC
and BEA. Soon other British airlines began operating scheduled
services. In 1972, BOAC and BEA combined two form British
Airway Board. Then in 1974, the two airlines became British
Airways.
The government announced
in 1979 that they were planning to sell shares in British
Airways. When Lord King became chairman of the group in 1984
he was to do what was necessary to prepare the airline for
privatization and to restore it to profitability. British
Airways was privatized in 1987.
Today British Airways
is UK’s largest international airline. They provide
travel flights to more than 550 destinations. British Airways
strives to provide excellent service to their customers both
in the air and on the ground. There are several companies
making up the British Airways Group including: British Airways
PLC, British Airways Limited, British Airways Travel Shops
Limited and other subsidiary companies.
