The year 2002, marked Britannia airway’s fortieth anniversary. In 1965, Britannia and Universal Sky Tours are acquired by Lord Thomson. Lord Thompson was a Canadian businessman. Britannia and other holiday businesses become part of the international Thomson organization. Britannia introduced many innovations in the holiday air charter business during the 1960’s. They were the first airline to offer passengers hot meals. Britannia was also the first to use assigned seats. They became the first European airline to use the Boeing 737-200 in 1968. When they brought out the Boeing 737’s, the number of passengers the airline carried nearly doubled. They had carried more than 1,260,000 passengers by the end of the same year.

Britannia bought their first Boeing 737 simulator for pilot training in 1976. In 1979, the airline carried over 3 million passengers. They had 19 Boeing 737’s in their fleet. Britannia became the first UK holiday airline to offer passengers in flight video and audio entertainment in 1984. They became the pioneer for charter flights going from the UK to Australia in 1988. In 1989, Britannia becomes the first in the industry to charter travel flights to New Zealand. During the 1990’s, Britannia continued to modernize their fleet as well as expand their network. They introduced destinations in America, Asia and South Africa. In 1998, Thomson Travel Group is becomes a public limited company.

IN 2003 Personal Digital Assistance was launched for crewmembers as well as laptops for pilots. Thomsonfly is introduced in 2004. There are four 737-500’s run by Britannia and servicing 11 European destinations.
