Airlines
Charles A. Lindbergh flew
mail in his DH-4 biplane to St. Louis from Chicago. Lindbergh
along with two other pilots flew three planes full of mail
back to Chicago from St. Louis. Lindbergh was then chief pilot
of Aircraft Corporation of Missouri. This was one of the companies
that along with many others would eventually become what is
now knows as American Airlines.
The Aviation Corporation
was formed in 1929. The airline subsidiaries were incorporated
in 1930 and became American Airways, Inc and became American
Airlines Inc in 1934. They became the first airline to fly
the Douglas DC-3 in commercial flight in 1936. In revenue
passenger miles, they became the country’s number one
domestic air carrier. They carried their one-millionth passenger
on Feb 16, 1937.
American Airlines introduced
their fist scheduled US freight service in 1944. Half of their
fleet was turned over to the military airline along with many
crews. American Airline operated American Overseas Airline
from 1945-1950. This trans-Atlantic division served many European
Countries. There was a merger between the international division
of American and the American Export Airlines. They formed
American Overseas Airline (AOA). In 1950 AOA and Pan American
World Airways merged
American Airlines began
offer the Family Fare Plan in 1978. This made it affordable
for families to travel. They introduced the Magnetronic Reservisor
in 1952. This made it possible to keep tract of seats that
were available on flights. They started nonstop transcontinental
services across the US in both directions in 1953.
American airlines built
the world’s first special facility to train flight attendants
called the American Airlines Stewardess College. American
Airlines became the fist to offer coast-to-coast jet service
and the first turboprop airplane designed by the US in 1959.
They then began using the Turbofan engine, which was the fist
in America in 1961.
Along with IBM they introduced
the Semi-Automated Business Research Environment. This is
a data processing system for businesses. . In 1970, American
merged with Trans Caribbean Airways, thus introducing and
then expanding Caribbean routes. In 1974, the Boeing 747 freighter
which could carry 221.000 pounds of cargo went into use. American
introduced the Super Saver in 1977, which became their most
popular fare ever.
American Airlines began
rewarding frequent flyers through their AADVANTAGE travel
awards program in 1981. They had flown their 500 millionth
passengers by 1982. That same year they started an interchange
service with Alaska airlines. They were then able to link
Anchorage and Fairbanks with Houston and Dallas Fort Worth
via Seattle.
In 1982 there was reorganization
and AMR Corporation the new holding company was formed, thus
becoming the parent company of American Airlines, Inc. American
introduced the American eagle system in 1984, which was a
network of regional airlines offering high-level service from
small communities to large cities. American started a second-day
door-to-door freight delivery system. They used passenger
aircraft, this service eventually turned into same-day service.
Over the years, American
has continued to grow. They flew their billionth passenger
in 1991. They also expanded European routes. Routes to London
were added in 1994. They continued to expand their routes
through acquisitions. American Airlines also made improvements
to provide customers with more convenience and comfort including
making the airplanes accessible for laptops and making the
interiors roomier. American Airlines has four US gateways
to Japan
