Aer Lingus Airlines

In 1936, Aer Lingus was established by the Irish government. The purpose of the airline was to provide services to and from Ireland. On May 27, 1936, the first flights were from Dublin to Bristol. A DeHavilland 84 Dragon was Aer Lingus’s first aircraft. They received their first Douglas DC3 in 1940. Twenty of these aircraft were used between then and the 1960’s. They were used in flights between Britain and Europe.

Aerlinte Eireann was introduced in 1958 and it was services to New York. These flights were made using a fleet of three leased Lockheed L1049 Super Constellations. Aer Lingus took delivery of a fleet of Boeing aircraft in the 60’s. In the late 1970’s, the B707’s were replaced by B747’s. The airline continued to expand throughout the 1970’s. The company had many subsidiaries such as hotels, personal and project management services, airframe maintenance and other services by the 1980’s.

Problems in the economy in the 1990’s resulted in losses for Aer Lingus in 1993. They management therefore issued a restructuring plan. IN the years that followed things once again went well for Aer Lingus. They were able to increase their network in 1999 by entering strategic alliances with American Airlines and British Airways. Aer Lingus became a member of the oneworld global alliance in June of 2000. This is a group of more than 260,000 people dedicated to servicing customers in a network with more than 650 destinations throughout the world.

Aer Lingus again experienced problems after September 11, 2001. They enacted a survival plan. This plan included a cut of over 2000 employees, a pay freeze and sale of non-essential assets. They also expanded their network and introduced a lower fare strategy. These plans greatly helped the company and they were once again a profitable airline. Each day, Aer Lingus provides about 170 flights. They travel to over 50 destinations in Ireland, the UK, Continental Europe and the US.
