Holiday
Insurance Cover
As winter draws to an end and
spring approaches many of us will start planning our holidays.
Whether it’s a relaxing break away in the sun, a short
stint skiing or finding some little known local spot somewhere
we all need a break from work and some time to relax. Sensibly
many of us will take care to budget not only for the cost
of the flights and the holiday itself but for holiday
insurance cover as well. This is just as well since
top insurance firm Legal and General reveal that a single
airline last year reported permanent baggage losses of over
5,000.
That’s not the whole
story though. While we consider holiday insurance an important
part of planning a holiday how many of us take care that we
adequately cover our belongings? According to Legal and General
most holidaymakers consider their luggage to be worth £500
and one in four people don’t even estimate the value
of their luggage to ascertain their insurance cover is sufficient.
While £500 might sound like a lot at first when you
consider the sort of things we take on holiday with us it’s
really a conservative guess for most holidaymakers. For a
start a suitcase is probably worth a fair amount, then taking
into account electrical goods such as cameras or hairdryers
and clothes, some of which will have been purchased recently
for the holiday, it becomes apparent that our luggage is worth
far more than we anticipated. In fact on average a family
of four takes £2,500 worth of belongings on holiday
with them.
Additionally holidaymakers on sports holidays where specialist
equipment or clothing is required such as skiing, snowboarding
or water-sports can end up taking approximately £2,500
of luggage individually.
While losing your luggage
will mar a holiday significantly that’s nothing compared
to the shock of discovering your insurance cover will only
cover one fifth of your belongings. It’s important that
holidaymakers take this newly released information from Legal
and General on board and establish the value of their luggage
so they can ensure they have adequate holiday insurance cover
in place.
The options available for
holiday insurance are considerable and holidaymakers
can chose to insure with the travel company providing their
holiday, one of the many holiday insurance companies on the
market or through their home insurance provider. As with choosing
any form of insurance there are many different holiday insurance
plans out there and it’s a question of selecting what
type of insurance and what company provides the best policy
for your personal circumstances.
