Campaign launched over travel insurance for cancer victims

The Macmillan Cancer Support charity is launching a campaign over the unfair treatment of cancer victims when it comes to getting travel insurance.

According to reports cancer sufferers are usually charged tow or three times more for a travel insurance policy to go abroad, even if they have been clear of the cancer for some years. The charity is seeking fair treatment for cancer victims when it comes to travel insurance premiums, and is demanding that cancer sufferers are treated with more sensitivity by travel insurance companies.

According to the charity insurance companies have been insensitive when dealing with cancer victims, as well as charging them extortionate fees on travel cover. One woman told the charity that an insurance company asked of her husband, a cancer sufferer, was going to die and also asked how long he'd got.

One official from Macmillan Cancer Support stated: 'Hundreds of people contact Macmillan about travel insurance every month. They tell us they're being refused travel insurance or quoted massive premiums and they just don't understand why. More people are living long and active lives after cancer, and that's why Macmillan is calling on the travel insurance industry to look again at the risk posed by people affected by cancer and improve the deal offered to them.'

An official from insurance company Norwich Union stated: 'If you look across the travel insurance industry, there are two ways of dealing with pre-existing medical conditions: insurers can either exclude any claims related to that condition, or they can say they will cover it but will charge you more for your policy. We would tend to be in the former category.'
