A leading insurance company in the UK has warned that consumers in the UK should make sure that they check on their levels of home insurance cover before they embark upon any DIY projects this Easter.
With the Easter break around the corner, many people may be thinking of taking advantage of the pleasant weather and the break from work by taking on DIY projects around the house – but as officials from Churchill Insurance have pointed out this could very easily turn into a DIY disaster, and without adequate levels of home insurance cover could result in great financial losses.
According to figures from Churchill Insurance around twenty percent of consumers have caused damage to their home or to the contents within their home in the last years whilst attempting to carry out DIY jobs around the home. Around half of this figure damaged their home or contents on at least two occasions in the past year, and the other half just once.
And with fifty one percent of householders admitting that they are not very good at DIY, nineteen percent saying that they don’t have time to learn about DIY, and eighteen percent saying that they cannot get the hang of DIY, there is a good chance of something going wrong for many of those attempting some form of DIY work.
The head of Churchill Home Insurance stated: 'Householders who have elected to include accidental damage cover under their home insurance policy have the added reassurance that they are covered if a DIY accident causes damage in the home.'
Amongst the common disasters are paint spillages on carpets, broken furniture and ornaments, drilling into water pipes or electrical cables, and damaging upholstery.
According to figures from Churchill the average cost of accidental damage during DIY projects is around £540, but by ensuring that they have the right level of insurance cover including accidental damage cover, consumers could save themselves a small fortune in situations such as this.
