In the light of the government crackdown on travel related insurance, where it has been claimed that many consumers are not even aware of what they are and are not covered for, those jetting off on a winter sports holiday are being urged to check their insurance policies to make sure that they are covered for the activities that they plan to take part in.
An independent financial group warns consumers that they are not automatically covered for winter sports activities on many policies, but many may not be aware of this – and it could end up costing them thousands of pounds in medical expenses unless they check and make sure that they are actually covered.
According to Moneyextra, most policies offer winter sports cover as an optional extra and not as an automotive inclusion to the policy, and consumers need to be aware of this. Many consumers have travel insurance cover through their banks accounts where they hold premium fee charging accounts, and also through elite credit cards, and again these consumers should check the policy that comes with their account to see whether they are covered in the event of injury or accident whilst taking part in winter sports activities. If not, consumers need to make sure that they get the cover added on due to the higher risk of injury and accidents on winter sports holidays.
The Senior Editor at Moneyextra, Robin Amlot, stated: "If you enjoy the adrenaline rush of winter sports, you should plan ahead and make sure your travel insurance is appropriate, covering you for the sports you intend to partake in and mountain evacuation." He also stated that failure to do this could result in holidaymakers paying through the nose in the event of an accident or injury whilst taking part in these activities.
In a separate issue, the government has stated that there needs to be tougher regulations on travel cover as many policies do not cover consumers for certain situations such as terrorist attacks.
