Brits should ensure that they have adequate insurance cover in January
Experts are warning that during the month of January more Brits will be hit by burglars than at any other time of the year, with expected figures of one burglary every thirty five seconds. There is set to be a twenty six percent rise on burglaries over the course of January and the early part of the year following the Christmas and New Year period. According to experts from the Halifax these burglaries could cost consumers around one hundred and seventy million pounds.
According the officials from the Halifax the rise in burglaries over the early part of the year results from the expensive items that come into many homes over the Christmas period, which thieves then target. The darker evenings also make it easier for burglars to conduct their business. Halifax state that most burglaries tend to take place when it is dark, but people should still keep an eye out and take necessary security measures during the day.
Experts also urge consumers to ensure that they have adequate contents insurance cover in place, particularly those that have received expensive gifts and gadgets over Christmas that may no already be covered under the standard insurance cover. The expensive items are the ones that thieves will target, and therefore consumers should ensure that if they are the victim of theft they are at least able to recoup the financial cost of the item.
One official from Halifax Home Insurance stated: "We tend to see a rise in burglaries during January as burglars know that it is the time when our homes are packed with lots of new and expensive items, ranging from electrical goods to jewellery. We must remember that thieves are opportunists, and will strike during the day or night if they feel a property has inadequate security and the timing is right. The fact so many burglaries take place during daylight hours shows the importance of always remaining vigilant."
