TVR
Cars
TVR is derived from the
creator’s first name, which was Trevor. In 1947, the
first car built under this name was hand built by Trevor Wilkinson.
The second car was built in 1950. In 1951 the third car was
built. In the beginning very few TVR cars were built.
The first backbone type
chassis was created by Trevor Wilkinson in 1955. It continued
to be used in all TVR’s over the years. In 1957 the
first actual production run started. From the beginning, TVR
had a series of financially problems. TVR changed names in
1958 to Layton Sports Cars Ltd. There were no real changes
in the company except the financial backing and the name.
The same year, the T TVR Mk 1 went into production. Grantura
Engineering began supplying components and body shells for
the TVR in 1959. The final assemblies were completed by Layton.
They began producing the Grantura. This is a fiberglass sports
car.
The company eventually
became known as Grantura Engineering. They began producing
the V8 Griffith. The Griffith 200 could go 200mph. Most of
the cars went ot the United States. The company had financial
problems and in 1965 was purchased by Martin Lilly. TVR Engineering
became the company name once again. There was now a higher
level of finish and quality control. The company slowly began
to turn around with the first series of the Vixen. Later,
the Tuscan series was introduced. These cars were quality
cars with high performance. TVR become a world-class producer
of sports cars and began creating many high performing cars.
Over the years, TVR has continued to build cars with higher
and higher performance.
There are 5 models in the
TVR range, with UK car insurance group 20
for all car types. This insurance group is due to the prestige
and high performance of every class of car.
