Saab cars

SAAB (Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget) was established in 1937 in Sweden. The purpose of the company at the time was to produce high-performance aircraft. That was before the war and starting in 1946, after the war, Saab was able to apply their knowledge to automobile engineering. Saab's first automobile prototypes were introduced in 1947. They had a two-stroke engine and front wheel drive.

Saab 92 became the first series to go into production. Between 1949 and 1956, over 20,000 of these cars were produced. In 1955, Saab introduced the Saab 93. This was a 3-cylinder car with tubeless tires. The following year they introduced their first sports car. This car was called the Sonett and could go 160km/hr. Only 6 of these cars were ever manufactured. In 1959, they introduced the Saab 95 wagon. The following year they brought out the Saab 96. This was a big seller and between 1960-1980, 547,000 of these cars were sold. 1966 was the first year for the Saab 99. This car brought out many innovations over the years. In 1973 they introduced a Saab 99 hatchback. This became a signature Saab car. Then in 1976 they introduced the 99 Turbo. This was the first reliable turbo car for every day use in the world. Saab 900, was the first 16-valve turbo in the world and it came out in 1983.

In 1986, Saab made the 900 convertible. Between 1986-1998 this car accounted for 15% of Saab's sales. In 1990 the car became an independent company; Saab Automobile AB. Saab celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1997. They introduced the 9-5 wagon and 9-3 Viggen in 1999. The Viggen was sporty and had 225HP.

Saab produced their first all wheel drive with their 9-2x in 2004. They also were they also created the Alcokey concept with the purpose of keeping would be drunk drivers from starting their car. In 2005, they introduced their fist sport utility. Saab continues to design innovative cars and introduce innovative features. They have been adding more types of cars with the addition of all wheel drive and now sport utility vehicles.
