Cars
The history of Porsche really dates back to when Dr. Ferdinand
Porsche introduced his first design. This design was the Lohner-Porsche
which was an electric carriage. He showed this design at the
World’s Fair in Paris.
If you are worried about car insurance premiums then maybe
Porsche would not be a wise choice, there are not
many cars available in the UK with a car insurance
group less than 20.
The first Porsche car was registered on June 8, 1948. This
car was known as the 356 with a 1086cc 30kW VW
engine. In the year 1949 production of this car began in Stuttgart,
Germany. This was the location of the Reutter Company, which
was assigned to build 500 body works for the 345. This car
had a 1.1 liter engine and 40HP. The car could go up to 140kph.
Porsche built the 1.5L flat-12 supercharged Cisitalia in
the 1950’s. This was a racing car and had four-wheel
drive. The first two right-hand drive Porsche 356s were seen
in 1951. They were imported by Norman Hamilton into Australia.
Porsche created the 550 mid-engined race car named Spyder
in 1953. The Porsche 901 was shown at the Frankfurt Motor
Show. This car was later renamed the 911. It had a 2L flat-6,
air-cooled engine. A 2.2L engine would eventually be used
and after that a 2.4L. Production of this car started in 1964.
The 914 car featured a 4-cylinder engine in 1969. The year
1973 saw the new G-body 911. The engine used was now a 2.7L
flat-6. The same year at the Paris Motor Show, Porsche showed
the prototype for a Turbo 911. In 1975, the 924 was introduced.
It had a 4-cylinder, water-cooled front engine. At the Frankfurt
Motor Show of 1981, a concept car of a 911 4WD is shown. The
same model car won the Paris-Dakar rally in 1984. Three years
later the Porsche 959 was introduced. This car had electronic
controlled 4WD. This car also featured ABS brakes. The 911
Turbo featured a 3.6L engine in 1993. This car cost au$270K.
Three years later a mid-engined Porsche called Boxster was
introduced. This was a more affordable Porsche, with a lower
car insurance group.
Porsche celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1998. At that
time it was said that more than 1,000,000 Porsches had been
built. The legend of Porsche carries on today. New cars are
introduced but the quality remains the same.
