Land
Rover
The idea of the ‘Land Rover’
came about from the Ford car designer Maurice Wilks. It was
his intention to produce a vehicle which could be used for
various purposes – other than the simple ‘getting
from a to b.’ Agricultural uses and off-road driving
were the aims behind the new model.
It just so happened that Maurice Wilk’s brother was
the managing director of Rover at that time, and very much
interested in the project. This meant a lot of backing for
Land Rover and for Maurice, therefore development started
without any problems.
Land Rover production started just under two year after it’s
initial conception – simple structure on the outside
using engine parts from other vehicles in the Rover range,
the Land Rover rolled out.
The simple idea caught on and, due to it’s potential
for a whole variety of uses, the Land Rover became very popular.
So much so that orders from around the world were taken and
Rover began to export this new vehicle – aggressive
promotion was not needed for the single fact that it was a
new development which was highly useful – thus word
caught on. However despite high demand, due to lack of materials
at the time, under one hundred Land Rover’s were actually
produced. However, despite these limitations in the second
year of distribution sales and output had gown to a staggering
eight thousand thus the legend of Land Rover was born.
Popular Land Rover models in their UK range include:
Land Rover Defender – a solid looking
vehicle the Defender has the more basic style of the range
with prices upward of twenty thousand and an car insurance
group of eight.
Land Rover Discovery – a more luxurious
looking vehicle than the Defender, the Discovery features
five or seven seats (for those with a larger family or move
a lot of equipment around / need the capacity) and five doors,
also available as an automatic. The car insurance
group of the Discovery is significantly higher than
the Defender.
