Jeep
Although the actual term and trademark’ Jeep’
is now owned by the Chrysler
company the term is generally used in a generic sense
(especially in the UK) to mean a 4x4 or off road vehicle.
The term was first applied to mean a motor vehicle in World
War I. It was a familiar expression used by Army personnel
to describe a new motor vehicle received for a test. The term
was carried on to be used as the phonetic abbreviation for
the ‘Government80’ wheel based car used in the
nineteen forties. The first official use of the name (rather
than slang or abbreviation) came in World War II where the
US produced the vehicle, named ‘Willys Quarter Ton Jeep’.
The name was further etched on peoples minds and became the
common descriptive term it is today.
