Bentley
The Bentley company has
had a range of obstacles to overcome during their years
of existence – in fact the original incarnation of
the company was only around for twelve years. The company
was created in nineteen nineteen, eventually closing in
nineteen thirty one. Created by two brothers W.O Bentley
(engineering master and racing driver) and H.M Bentley (responsible
for financial management of the company) the companies first
success was in their range of three models, one of which
was the D.F.P which featured a new style of aluminium pistons.
After the First World War
W.O Bentley set about designing his ideal car for which
he had several key aims: it should be a very solid, stock
car like build with normal power for driving in cities but
with the potential for great power and acceleration –
needed for racing.
Bentley’s new style
of car proved to be very popular on the motor racing circuit
– which facilitated a much higher profile, picking
of sales from the manufacturers. After years of tinkering
it’s most high profile win came at Le Mans in nineteen
twenty four.
However the brand’s
reputation for a powerful racing car put buyers off as they
were hesitant about driving such a vehicle, therefore the
car was never really accepted into the hearts of the average
car buyer / driver.
Quite a change for Bentley
came in 1931 when it was bought out by Rolls-Royce who proceeded
to put their stamp of luxury on the brand, transforming
it into a more ‘approachable’ model for which
sales then increased to the level it reaches today as a
symbol of elite manufacturing.
So what are the prices
of Bentley’s today? Well, they aren’t cheap,
ranging currently from over one hundred and ten thousand
pounds to one hundred and seventy thousand pounds. Car
insurance groups are high, because the cars are
so expensive, at 20.
