The company and its initial drive were the
brainchild of a man named Lionel Martin who wanted to produce
vehicles with the following specification in mind –
“a quality car of good performance and appearance :
a car for the discerning owner driver with fast touring in
mind”
Teaming up with a similarly minded man –
Robert Bamford, the pair created their first car in nineteen
thirteen, a competition vehicle with the intent to rivaling
the esteemed manufacturer Bugatti. A four speed-gearbox and
1400cc engine produced a top speed of seventy miles per hour
produced by the uninspired company name of Bamford & Martin
Limited, which was based in the Kensington area of London.
After the war the company received renewed
finance from a Count, the running of which was now completely
under the control of Robert Bamford after his partner took
retirement.
It was after this time that the recognised
company name which we now recognise was created (certainly
a catchier and stronger sounding name than Bamford & Martin
Limited). At this time one major motoring competition was
the Aston Clintozi Hill Climb. The cars produced by Lionel
Martin typically performed very well at this meeting, and,
baking upon the success achieved the new name of the company
was formed from both the race, and the current brand, creating
‘Aston Martin.’
Much of the current popularity for the Aston
Martin brand comes from the popular car featured in the James
Bond films. This coupled with a reputation for excellent manufacturing
and luxury maintains the strong name Aston Martin has today.
Aston Martin vehicles currently range from
just over one hundred thousand pounds to about one hundred
and sixty thousand pounds for a top of the range model. The
car insurance group for all models is around
20, due to the expensive nature of the range.
