In nineteen ten a new company was created,
calling itself Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili (the acronym,
as you may have seen is A.L.F.A) which was based in Milan.
Its world famous logo was created by a draughts man that the
newly formed company hired to create a distinctive badge.
The draughts man, named Romano Cattaneo took his inspiration
from the symbol of the famous Visconti family’s coat
of arms, the symbol that is still used today.
The Alfa company itself was created by a
Milanese group of motor racing fans, looking to produce quality
motor racing vehicles.
Five years after the creation of the company
it was bought by Nicola Romeo and, as such, the name of the
company and badge changed to ‘Alfa-Romeo-Milano.’
The first car produced under this name was in nineteen twenty
and called the ‘Torpedo.’ However whilst cars
were produced under Nicola Romeo’s reign the entrepreneur
also diversified the company to manufacture military engines
for the war effort of World War I.
After the wartime period the company came
under the direction of Ugo Stella who brought the aim of the
company back to its original manufacturing intent –
creating motor racing vehicles – once again.
In the present times the company has built
upon its rich heritage, producing many fine cars to this day,
such as the Alfa 147, which was named car of the year for
2001. The company has now been running for over ninety years,
celebrating their longevity by producing a range of exhibitions,
parading their fleet of cars.
Alfa Romeo models range from around £13,000
at the current time to around £30,000 for their top
of the range models (such as the Alfa Romeo Spider). Car
insurance groups clearly vary depending on the particular
model, however Alfa Romeo’s generally are from car
insurance groups eleven to twenty.
