What
kind of coverage can I expect with home insurance?
Home insurance was
created, and is provided in order to insure a person’s
possessions. As you can imagine this can potentially be a
vast list of items ranging from do-it-yourself appliances
to the kitchen sink.
Whilst the cover includes
a wide range of items, so too can it cover common ways in
which the property can be damaged. This can include (check
your policy and insurer for specific details):
Theft –
clearly a way in which you possessions can, in effect, become
someone else’s. If you are not covered and suffer a
break-in you would not be able to financial compensation redress
from anyone. Those items would be lost forever. Whilst items
of a sentimental value cannot be replaced one hundred percent
(as their true value lies in memories in history rather than
money) products of a non-sentimental nature can be. Many of
us own several thousands of pounds items in our home, the
loss of which without replacement would severely affect the
quality of our lifestyle. Home insurance cover provides settlement
if a successful claim is made to mitigate the effects of such
an emotionally impacting event.
Fire –
home insurance also covers the loss or damage of items through
fire. Fires can be spread throughout the household by a number
of means. Lighted cigarettes can accidentally light flammable
items to initiate a blaze. Cooking, whilst seeming a harmless
activity can cause fires if the proper care is not given.
And finally, one of the most common fire causes is that of
faulty electrical equipment from everyday items – all
of which we have in our home. Fire is statistically a very
tangible peril, therefore home insurance to cover against
losses can make both financial sense and provide peace of
mind.
Flooding
– damage via flooding can be more common than you think.
Whilst homes close to rivers and waterways may be a more obvious
choice for flooding potential one has to remember that we
all have access to running water and as such every homeowner
could potentially have loss or damage caused via flooding.
Whilst many houses plumbing systems are secure, others can
be more faulty the possibility of leaks and overflowing occurring.
Water damage can be significant and often a simple ‘drying
out’ will not be good enough to remove. Most home insurances
will cover against this, depending, of course, on the manner
in which it occurs (consult the terms and conditions of your
home insurance policy).
